Hovedprosesjonen, the main procession, is one of Bergen’s largest events of the day. Bands, clubs, associations, organisations and vehicles take part under the applicable rules.

Six columns

The procession has six columns. Columns 1, 2 and 6 have fixed positions, while columns 3, 4 and 5 rotate from year to year.

Column 1 — fixed position

The 17 May Committee, City Council, municipal departments and Armed Forces.

Column 2 — fixed position

Business associations, trade and shipping.

Columns 3, 4 and 5 — rotating positions

These three columns comprise:

  • A column for cultural organisations.
  • A column for humanist organisations and health organisations.
  • A column for colleges and universities and their clubs and associations.

The order of these three columns rotates each year. Their allocation to columns 3, 4 and 5 in 2027 will be published when ready.

Column 6 — fixed position

Sports clubs.

Who can take part?

The main procession’s six columns bring together the 17 May Committee, City Council and municipal departments, Armed Forces, business associations, trade and shipping, cultural organisations, humanist and health organisations, colleges and universities with their clubs and associations, and sports clubs.

Guidelines

Arrive at Koengen from 09:30. All participants must be present by 10:15. The main procession starts at 10:30 and goes from Koengen to Festplassen.

Start at the car park between Musikkbygget and Sentralgarasjen. The procession follows the road north of Musikkbygget to Bradbenken, continues into Sandbrogaten, turns left southwards into Slottsgaten and follows Bryggen.

The main procession and Flaggtoget follow the same main route in opposite directions. Where they meet, each keeps to the right in its own direction of travel. At Øvre Ole Bulls plass, the main procession comes down the western side while Flaggtoget goes up the eastern side.

After Kong Olav Vs plass, the main procession goes up the centre of Torgallmenningen to Sjømannsmonumentet, continues through Småstrandgaten and goes down Christies gate to Festplassen.

Columns 1, 2 and 6 have fixed positions. Columns 3, 4 and 5 rotate each year; this year’s allocation will be published when ready. The detailed assembly arrangements and map line will be refined before 17 May 2027.
