Three writers and a living theatrical heritage
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Henrik Ibsen and Nordahl Grieg all left a lasting mark on Norwegian literature and theatre. Bjørnson and Ibsen worked at Det norske Theater in Bergen in the 1850s. Important productions of Nordahl Grieg’s plays later took place at Den Nationale Scene.
Teaterparken contains Gustav Vigeland’s Bjørnson statue, Nils Aas’s Ibsen statue and Roar Bjorg’s Nordahl Grieg statue. Wreath laying by the actors’ association connects Constitution Day with the Norwegian language, performing arts and writers’ role in society.
Bjørnson and 17 May in Bergen
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson chaired Bergen’s 17 May Committee in 1859 while also serving as theatre director. He helped revitalise Constitution Day celebrations. The ceremony therefore honours both the writer and a former leader of the Committee.
