Resistance and wartime seafarers
Leif Andreas Larsen, known as Shetlands-Larsen, was a central figure in the Shetland Bus operation. During the Second World War, its dangerous crossings carried people, weapons and supplies between Norway and Shetland.
Knut Steen’s statue was unveiled for the liberation anniversary in 1995. Nordstjernen, created by Laila Kongevold and erected in 2004, commemorates wartime merchant seafarers. The two memorials honour different aspects of seafarers’ contribution to freedom.
Getting there
The marker shows the area around the Shetlands-Larsen statue. Nordstjernen stands slightly further inland on the same quay. See the ceremonies on the interactive map.
