The connection across the North Sea
Leif Andreas Larsen (1906–1990), known as Shetlands-Larsen, was a key skipper in the Shetland Bus operation. During the Second World War, its crews transported agents, refugees and equipment between occupied Norway and Shetland. The dangerous crossings were vital to the connection with the Allies.
The freedom tree near his home
The memorial was unveiled on 8 May 1985, forty years after liberation. It consists of a plaque mounted on a stone and a thuja planted by Larsen himself. The freedom tree is a living symbol of peace and freedom near his former home.
The ceremony honours Larsen and all those who risked their lives in the North Sea crossings.
