Father of the Home Guard

Mons Olai Haukeland (1892–1983) was an officer, resistance member and a driving force behind the creation of Norway’s Home Guard. He fought in 1940 and organised resistance in Bergen during the occupation. Arrested in 1943, he was sent to German concentration camps and returned at the war’s end.

He led the Home Guard as inspector general from 1946 to 1958. His emphasis on local preparedness and voluntary service earned him the name father of the Home Guard.

A local connection

Haukeland also taught physical education at Sydneshaugen school from 1923. The memorial connects his work for young people, sport and national defence.
