Priest, poet and Eidsvoll delegate

Jonas Rein (1760–1821) was a priest and poet who represented Bergen at the Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll in 1814. He belonged to the independence party and argued for Norwegian independence.

He served as a priest at Nykirken from 1808. His memory connects constitutional history with the district’s church history.

A Nordnes tradition

The memorial plaque honours Rein’s contribution to the Constitution. Nordnæs Bataillon continues the tradition through wreath laying, reminding us that Constitution Day celebrates democracy and the people who helped shape it.
