Prime minister and Bergen native
Johan Ludwig Mowinckel (1870–1943) was a shipowner and Liberal Party politician. He served as mayor of Bergen and led three Norwegian governments as prime minister. During the Second World War, he worked with Nortraship, the organisation managing Norway’s merchant fleet.
Mowinckel died in New York in 1943 and is buried at St. Jacobs cemetery in Bergen. Unge Venstre’s wreath laying honours his political service and connects the celebrations with democracy and the city’s history.
