Language and community

Ivar Aasen (1813–1896) was a linguist and poet. His travels and research into Norwegian dialects laid the foundations for landsmål, later called Nynorsk. His work gave spoken Norwegian a new place in written culture.

Aasen also wrote poems and songs. Wreath laying and communal singing connect Constitution Day with linguistic heritage and the living community around Norwegian song and literature.

The bust at the library

The bust outside the University Library is by Arne Mæland. Studentmållaget i Bergen honours Aasen with a wreath, and everyone is welcome to join the singing.
