Music as resistance

Harald Sæverud (1897–1992) was one of Norway’s leading composers. He lived at Siljustøl, where nature and the landscape inspired his music.

During the occupation, he wrote works expressing protest and resistance. Kjempeviseslåtten, composed in 1943, gained particular symbolic power and remains a musical expression of the desire for freedom.

A different kind of composer monument

Bernar Venet’s monument in Byparken consists of large curved steel elements. It is an abstract memorial rather than a portrait. Wreath laying by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra honours Sæverud’s music and his place in Bergen’s cultural history.
