Eidsvoll delegate and educator
Hans Jacob Grøgaard (1764–1836) was a priest, textbook author and delegate to the Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll. In 1814, he represented Nedenes county, now part of Agder. He served as parish priest at Nykirken in Bergen from 1822 until his death.
Grøgaard wanted children to understand what they read. His alphabet book and reader became widely used and contributed to popular education in Norway.
Constitutional history at Nykirken
Nordnæs Bataillon honours Grøgaard with wreath laying. The ceremony connects Constitution Day with both the work of creating the Constitution and the knowledge that enables democratic participation.
The ceremony takes place beside the large iron cross at the lower end of Nykirken towards C. Sundts gate.
