Bergen’s world-famous composer
Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) was born in Bergen and brought Norwegian music international recognition. His Piano Concerto in A minor, music for Peer Gynt, songs and piano pieces have reached audiences worldwide.
Bergen, nature and Norwegian folk music were important parts of his musical world. Troldhaugen became his home and is now a museum dedicated to the composer.
A monument in the city’s heart
Ingebrigt Vik’s Grieg statue was unveiled in Byparken in 1917, ten years after Grieg’s death. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra honours a central figure in the city’s musical life and Norway’s cultural history.
