A voice from Bergen
Amalie Skram (1846–1905) grew up in Bergen and became one of Norway’s leading novelists. In works including Hellemyrsfolket, she portrayed poverty, social conditions and people’s struggle to find their place.
Her writing gave a voice to experiences often overlooked. Constitution Day also honours cultural heritage and people who challenged their times through words and art.
The statue at Klosterhaugen
Maja Refsum’s statue was unveiled in 1949. It stands at Klosterhaugen, in an area closely connected with the writer’s childhood.
Amalie Skram upper secondary school conducts the wreath laying, carrying the connection between literature, education and city history onwards to new generations.
