The man behind “Nystemten”

Johan Nordahl Brun (1745–1816) was a priest, bishop and poet. He was Bishop of Bjørgvin from 1804 until his death in 1816. In Bergen, he is especially known for writing the lyrics of “Nystemten”, also called Bergen’s city anthem, under the title “Udsigter fra Ulriken”.

The song has a special place in the city’s traditions as Bergen’s own anthem. Brun’s lyrics are sung to an older French minuet, a traditional melody. A cittern depicted on the grave monument connects it with the song’s familiar opening words.
